PURE LIGHT

The greatest secret of the young
is that they are older
at heart
than we will ever know
and we
will keep our secret from them
that they intimidate us
with their forcefulness
and maturity
and when it comes to philosophy
we've got nothing to offer
butt attentiveness
because we learn our outlooks
by cockeyed experience
the holes already poked
in our theories
by sun spots
we call blind spots
and we forget
that sometimes it's okay
to break ugly things
like bad habits
and our mothers' good china
For the old ways lose their truth
the moment they pass
the oracle's lips.
